IPEDS Workshop
9 a.m. - 5 p.m., Monday May 1

The Association for Institutional Research (AIR) and the National Higher Education Benchmarking Institute (NHEBI) are co-hosting a one-day IPEDS Workshop for data providers and users in conjunction with the National Benchmarking Conference. Financial support for this workshop is provided by the National Center for Education Statistics (NCES).

IPEDS Finance Training for IR Professionals
This workshop is designed for IR professionals who have no training in finance or accounting, and focuses on a general understanding of higher education finance with an overview of where, how, and why IPEDS Finance data are used. Topics include an introduction to higher education finance; Governmental Accounting Standards Board (GASB) vs. Financial Accounting Standards Board (FASB); key accounting concepts; a review of general purpose financial statements and how they relate to the IPEDS Finance survey; and reporting comparison challenges. Exercises provide participants with experience completing the IPEDS Finance survey and benchmarking with commonly used finance variables.

IPEDS Data and Benchmarking:
Supporting Decision Making and Institutional Effectiveness This workshop introduces the fundamentals of benchmarking as a measure of institutional effectiveness. It is designed for individuals with little to no experience in benchmarking studies. Participants use data from the IPEDS Surveys, Data Feedback Reports, and the “Use of Data” section of the NCES website to learn about the types of comparison groups that can be constructed. Exercises demonstrate establishment of key performance indicators (KPIs) and identification of variables to refine comparison groups.

Note: Participants are required to bring a MAC or PC laptop with wireless capability and Microsoft Excel.

Exploring the Benchmarking Institute Projects Workshop
1-3:30p.m., Thursday May 4

Lou Guthrie & Michelle Taylor
National Higher Education Benchmarking Institute

This workshop will introduce attendees to all four of the Institute’s projects:

  • National Community College Benchmark Project (NCCBP): Credit & Non-credit
  • Cost and Productivity Project

A demonstration of each project will show attendees the nuts and bolts of each project, including the key metrics in the project, data entry requirements and tips, and navigating the websites.  Demonstrating the reporting tools for each project will be emphasized, showing how to build peer and custom reports and charts.  The workshop will show how to download, print, and manipulate the data and we will also share some of the ways our members use the project data.  This workshop will be held in a computer lab but you can bring your laptop or tablet with you if you want.  Exercises will include actually using your college’s data, but if you are not currently a member we will provide you with data from “Emerald City Community College” to use. This workshop will be a great opportunity to ask any questions about the projects or make suggestions.
