The “Student Satisfaction Assessment Workshop: Making the Most of the Data You Gather” will provide you with guidance on using your Student Satisfaction Inventory results, as well as the data from the other instruments in the suite (Priorities Survey for Online Learners, Adult Student Priorities Survey, Adult Learner Inventory). This interactive session will provide you with practical suggestions and examples for: 

  • Surveying your students with improved response rates;
  • Reviewing and sharing your results on campus, so people will care about the data;
  • Exploring the data through a variety of proven methods;
  • Responding to the data with effective initiatives; and
  • Informing the campus of the actions you have taken to close the feedback loop before you survey again.

Data, the Good Four-Letter Word! Using Data to make Leadership Decisions

We all use data to help us make decisions. How do we know if we are using enough data? What data do you use to answer the right questions? When do we have enough data to make a decision without analysis paralysis? This session will answer these questions and share some of the data that is useful for making decisions about enrollment, programs, construction, personnel and others. Examples of the use of data in making decisions will be shared as well as the sharing of when data (science) meets creativity and intuition (art) to move an institution forward. There will also be discussion about making mistakes even though you had the data and how to learn and grow from the experience.

Communities of Practice: Promoting the Effective Use of State Postsecondary Data Systems

State postsecondary education data systems are vital information assets for policymakers, researchers, and the public. The Communities of Practice project at the State Higher Education Executive Officers Association builds upon SHEEO’s ongoing efforts to measure the capacity and effective use of state postsecondary data systems, and provides states with opportunities to develop solutions to common issues with those systems. Since 2010, SHEEO has conducted periodic studies of the content, structure, and use of state postsecondary data systems through its Strong Foundations surveys. The Communities of Practice project extends this work by providing professional development and technical assistance to policy analysts and researchers. This session will provide an overview of the Communities of Practice, and SHEEO’s efforts to increase effective use of state data systems.

Setting Educational Attainment Goals: Not just more, but more of what?

NCHEMS has been integrally involved in helping foundations and states in setting educational attainment goals. They vary from state-to-state because of the environment in which policymakers and stakeholders work, and the educational and economic conditions of the states. Patrick Kelly, Vice President of NCHEMS, will present some of the data and models used in a few states, as well as their tie to workforce and economic development. In addition to striving for a more educated citizenry, there is increasing pressure to better link postsecondary completion in states to available jobs and future economic needs. The answer is no longer just more, but more of what? How do we go about this in a responsible way?

Beyond the Ordinary: How Visually Appealing Data Reporting is Changing Bergen Community College

Data reports at Bergen Community College used to evoke reactions ranging from mild skepticism to downright anxiety. A collection of unreadable charts and bland tables, data reports were not being utilized by administrators and decision makers at the College. The Center for Institutional Effectiveness knew there had to be a cultural shift in the way data was viewed and used. By taking existing data and reporting it in a relatable, accessible and visually stimulating way, the research professionals at the College changed the narrative and started impacting Bergen in more ways than originally expected. This presentation will show how the Center for Institutional Effectiveness ended the dark days of data consumption at Bergen by recycling data, communicating straightforward statistics, and packaging it all in a visually stimulating way. The audience will leave with blueprints on how to engage decision makers in data-heavy talks, examples of effective data visualization, and ways that this new approach can cause change at their institutions as it did at Bergen.

Delivering the College Promise for Our Nation's 21st Century Students

Martha Kanter, Executive Director, College Promise Campaign & Senior Fellow, New York University 

All across the nation, we are building support for states and localities to create College Promise programs, which allow students to start and complete a community college education without taking on mountains of student debt. While individual program models vary, each is guided by the following core principles:

  • A College Promise is a commitment to fund a college education for every eligible student, advancing on the path to earn a degree, a certificate, and/or credits that transfer to a four-year university, starting in America’s community colleges.
  • It’s a promise to prepare students for the 21st Century workforce and the pursuit of the American Dream without the burden of unmanageable college debt.
  • It’s a promise to make the first two years of community college – at a minimum – as universal, free, and accessible as public high school has been in the 20th Century.

Graduate More Student Faster through Improve Course Scheduling

Over the past decade, degree completion has increased 46 percent at Somerset Community College, a public two-year institution located in Somerset, Kentucky with an enrollment of 4,000 full-time equivalent students. This significant increase in degree completion is, in part, due to improve course scheduling and a drive to have students take more courses each semester. Since 2010, Somerset Community has partnered with Ad Astra to consistently improve their course scheduling efficiency, and in the process, reduced course sections 34 percent, saving the institution $2.3 million. In the process, Somerset also increased the course enrollment ratio 24 percent while expanding the share of student credit hours taught by full-time faculty 20 percent. This session explore how nationally benchmarked data from multiple data sources (HESI, IPEDS, CCSSE) can improve student outcomes and save institutions money. Specifically, by focusing on the course schedule, Somerset Community College was able to reduce waste through inefficiencies, increase student credit hour production, and saving million in the process.

Breaking Barriers and Building Bridges to Online Student Success

Learn how a large community college is using data, applying benchmarking, and creating innovations that reduce online learning barriers and support improved student outcomes. Diverse teams of faculty and staff have designed, deployed, and continually improve an eLearning orientation for students and an online teaching certificate for faculty. IT collaboration has reduced enrollment impacts and ensures at-risk students take the orientation, and a new policy requires faculty to be certified before teaching online courses. Take away lessons learned and practical strategies for replicating on your campus.

This initiative was recognized by the League of Innovations as the winner of the 2017 Innovation of the Year Award.

Data, Data Everywhere!

In August 2013, Laramie County Community College (LCCC) published its first KPI (Key Performance Indicator) Report Card. Since then, LCCC has made great strides to embed the KPIs and related data in planning and evaluation across the college. In this session, we will explore several examples of how LCCC has successfully incorporated the use of data into its systems and processes. We will also discuss remaining challenges and some strategies to meet these needs.

Peers and Aspirants: A Methodology for Benchmarking Student Achievement Outcomes & Identifying Effective Practices

This methodology involves both quantitative and qualitative research in a staged approach as follows:

(1) utilizing key variables to identify peer institutions;
(2) comparing peers against desired student achievement outcomes to identify aspirant institutions; and finally
(3) conducting exploratory and case analysis to identify effective practices at aspirant institutions.

By undertaking this study, the institution will learn considerably about their positioning with respect to peers, and become informed about practices that have been employed elsewhere that might be custom tailored at the institution.

Prioritizing Courses for Support

Performance funding is being widely relied on across the country to incent institutions to strengthen progress and outcomes on indicators that policymakers identify as statewide priorities. Successful course completion is a building block for improving performance on many of the measures being used across states. Skills are built and momentum is gained at the course level. State College of Florida, Manatee-Sarasota staff examined course grades to generate discussion and prioritize courses for support. Courses where large numbers of students performed at sub-standard levels were identified and interventions are being collaboratively developed and implemented to continuously improve performance in these challenging courses. Join us to hear about our process and progress and to contribute your ideas and insights.

The Relationship between Information Collected by the NCCBP Regarding Non-Credit Workforce Education and What Managers of Those Programs Need

Data from past Non-credit Education and Workforce Training Benchmark Project surveys suggests that, while a few institutions do quite well with non-credit workforce education programs, at least as many really struggle to grow their programs and break even. What kinds of benchmarking information do managers of non-credit workforce education programs need to gauge their success and their efforts to strengthen and grow their programs, and how much of that information is NCCBP providing? This presentation is the product of in-depth discussions with managers of non-credit workforce education programs at one institution in an attempt to understand what useful information NCCBP is providing and what more meaningful information it could provide.

The Credit/Non-Credit Relationship

This presentation looks at the analysis of 10 years’ worth of credit and non-credit data to see what sort of relationship, if any, exists between the two. Findings show that a significant number of students enroll in both credit and non-credit courses. Demographic variables and course-taking patterns are explored. Uses for this type of analysis to boost enrollment and strengthen the credit/non-credit relationship are discussed.

We have found a fun way to engage our staff and faculty in reflecting on what our future environment will be in terms of students, jobs and fields that don’t exist yet, and how we can prepare ourselves to meet future challenges and possibilities.

The Impact of Failing Grades on Student Success and Outcomes: A Preliminary Investigation

As a first step toward understanding current student performance and identifying opportunities to increase student success, the Office of Institutional Research at Southeast Community College, conducted a preliminary study about the patterns and outcomes of students who received failing grades compared to students who never received a failing grade.
